The boys' basketball team from Hotchkiss High School saw a little bit of everything over the course of three games last week.
The Bulldogs are still in the thick of things in the race for the 1A/2A Western Slope League regular season crown. Hotchkiss is tied for third place in the league standings at 5-4 and is 6-10 overall.
Going into the final three games of the regular season, Hotchkiss will have much to play for this week.
PHS 63, Hotchkiss 62
The Bulldogs suffered a heartbreaker last Tuesday when they fell in the last second after leading the Eagles for almost all of the game.
Clayton Oxford poured in 26 points for the Bulldogs and seemingly couldn't miss in an epic performance. Hotchkiss was all over the No. 4 Eagles early, leading 17-16 after the first and 35-28 at halftime.
The Bulldogs upped their lead to 47-40 going into the final frame but could not hold on. Zack Allen scored 15 points and Sam Rodriguez chipped in with eight points for Hotchkiss.
HHS 48, Caprock 42
The Bulldogs played Eagles opponents back-to-back this week and prevailed at Caprock on Friday.
Suffering a bit of a letdown after the Paonia game, Hotchkiss was tied after one quarter and led 25-24 at halftime before winning it in the second half.
The dynamic Bulldogs duo was at it again as Clayton Oxford led the team with 13 points, eight of them free throws. Zack Allen scored 12 points and went 4-for-7 from the line in the Hotchkiss win.
Rangely 51, HHS 45
The Bulldogs rallied late, but fell just short in their fourth league loss of the year.
"The boys seemed tired this weekend, both emotionally and physically," Hotchkiss coach Eric Hollembeak said. "We played great on Tuesday and that did not transfer to Friday and Saturday."
Hotchkiss led the low-scoring affair 9-7 after the first but fell behind at halftime 25-20.
Clayton Oxford scored nine points and Zack Allen tallied a game-high 20 for the Bulldogs, including 12 in the fourth quarter.
The stretch run to the end of the season began last night for Hotchkiss, which hosted Cedaredge in a key game for both teams.
The Bulldogs' girls' team continued a tough season.
Hotchkiss fell to Paonia 60-10 last Tuesday and lost on the road Saturday at Rangely 60-47.
Results from the road game at Caprock were not available at press time. Hotchkiss has a 3-12 overall mark with a 2-6 record in league play.
The Bulldogs hosted Cedaredge last night.
