"The Friendliest Town Around" stands out among its peers on a website dedicated to recognizing the best of the best in America. Hotchkiss recently took the No. 2 spot among a list of "Top 12 Small Cities in Colorado" by the national website 101usa.com.
The site describes Hotchkiss as having "a number of recreation opportunities," but not being very well-known for its outdoor activities. Rather, 101usa.com focuses on its mild climate. According to the site, Hotchkiss doesn't "suffer from the bitter cold winters" typical of its neighbors. "Hotchkiss is located on the threshold between the high mountains ... and the deserts of Western Colorado." As a result, Hotchkiss is "lush and green and offers arguably the nicest year-round climate in the state."
Other attractions of note include proximity to the Black Canyon and the Gunnison Gorge, Morrow Point, Crystal, Blue Mesa and Crawford reservoirs, and the San Juan National Forest.
Creede made the top spot, with Lake City coming in at No. 3 followed by Silverton, Glenwood Springs, Telluride, Aspen, Durango, Ouray, Crested Butte, Steamboat Springs and Gunnison.
At their March 5 meeting Commissioners Doug Atchley, Mark Roeber and Don Suppes made two appointments to the county planning commission. Steve Shea was reappointed for a three-year term.
