Hotchkiss will welcome a new community celebration this summer.
"Farm to Fiddle" is scheduled for Aug. 12 and 13. The group formed as "Destination Hotchkiss" is behind the celebration. Co-organizer Marsy Moore said the group raised the idea of a festival as a way to benefit the entire community, bring more visitors to the area, and support and enhance the Delta County Fair, which this year runs Aug. 6-13 at the Fairgrounds in Hotchkiss.
The Hotchkiss town council supports the idea and voted unanimously at the Jan. 14 meeting to pony up the $500 to become a silver sponsor. "This is, I think, a very good event for our town," said mayor Wendell Koontz.
The event will be located downtown in order to benefit local businesses. The group plans arts and crafts booths, live entertainment, and tastings to highlight the area's many food and beverage producers. They're also entertaining other ideas including hosting a cowboy poet and a poker run.
"We want to really show that we have a great area for people to come to," said Moore.
Organizers also plan a juried art show to "illustrate that our artists are a mainstream part of our community and area," said Moore.
An outdoor expo with demonstrations and vendors representing hunting, fishing, biking, hiking and more will be headed by Terry Commander with Somerset-based Outdoors Alive.
The group wants to make Farm to Fiddle an annual event and is seeking volunteers and local vendors. Sponsorships ranging from a single "presenting sponsor" to family and individual sponsors are also available. For details, call Lynda Cannon at 201-7558 or Marsy Moore at 872-4277.
