Hotchkiss wins Screaming Eagle mat competition

The top scoring teams in this year's Screaming Eagles Wrestling Tournament were led by the Hotchkiss Bulldogs which scored 201.5 points. Cedaredge was second with 186.5 points with host team Paonia and Meeker tied for third with 186 points.

Championship Round

Delta County wrestlers represented the community well with eight athletes competing in championship matches at last Saturday's Screaming Eagles finals. There were 16 Delta County wrestlers who were part of consolation bracket competition battling for third place honors.

In the 106-pound bout, Palisade's Jagger Wade won the title with a pin (4:47) over Paonia's Zeb Etter.

Hotchkiss' Sergio Campos was one of two Bulldogs to claim an individual title. Campos pinned Meeker's Jake Pelloni (4:34) to win the 113-pound title.

Garrett Beck came up short in his quest for title at 120. The Eagles' grappler was pinned (2:31) by Mancos' Richard Martinez and finished second.

The 132-pound champion was Hotchkiss' Colton Hall, who pinned Bayfield's Jakey Sandrey at 3:17.

Sackett Chesnik battled through the competitors in the 138-pound classification but could not get past Meeker's Sheridan Harvey. Harvey won the title with a 2-0 decision.

Hotchkiss' Wade Katzdorn faced Lorenzo Pena of Ignacio for the 160-pound title. Pena found a pinning combination to earn the title.

This year's 195-pound Screaming Eagles' champion is Cedaredge's Tre' LaBossiere who scored a 5-4 decison over Paonia's Trevor Smith.

Consolation Round

Teams picked up valuable points with individuals coming back through the loser's bracket competition to finish third through sixth place.

Results from third place matches include Ryan Imhoff (Cedaredge) who placed third at 106 after getting past Hotchkiss' Landen Mayberry (OTHR1).

Cedaredge's Brian Hoerr finished fourth with a loss to Dalton Wommack (Custer County) in 113-pound competition; Sean Dale (Cedaredge) defeated Paonia's Gabe Ferguson (14-1) to finish third at 120; Eli Etter (Paonia) won by OTHR1 over Chris Lovato (Hotchkiss) at 126; Grey Neal (Paonia) was fourth (OTHR1) at 132; David Schipmann (Cedaredge) placed fourth (OTHR1) at 138; Jered Hulteen (Cedaredge) placed fourth (OTHR1) at 152; Brandon 0'Hern (Cedaredge) placed fourth (OTHR1) at 170; Jaden Miller (Paonia) was fourth at 182 (OTHR1); Devin Curtis (Hotchkiss) lost to Christian Carson (Hayden) 5-3 at 195; Taj Van der Linde (Cedaredge) defeated Cyrus Malek' Madani (Paonia) 9-4 at 220; Joseph Nault (Hotchkiss) placed fourth with loss by pin to Casey Orange of Mancos (2:58) at 285.

Fifth and sixth place winners from the Screaming Eagle Tournament include Jamal Helm (Hotchkiss), fifth place at 113; Presley Pene (Hotchkiss), sixth place at 120; Alex McCracken (Cedaredge) sixth place at 126; Cody Suave (Delta) fifth place at 138; Colton Hoerr (Cedaredge) fifth at 145; Cyrus Baxter (Paonia) sixth place at 152; Zach Anderson (Cedaredge) fifth at 160; Peter Katzdorn (Hotchkiss) fifth at 182; Kevin Chavez (Hotchkiss) sixth at 220 and Conner Collins, of Hotchkiss, but wrestling unattached, placed sixth at 285.
