Hotchkiss would benefit from marijuana sales

By Mary Hockenbery

Dear Editor:

The citizens of Hotchkiss have an opportunity to help in the economic recovery of Hotchkiss. Ballot measures 2A, 2B, and 2C allow for the well-regulated establishment of the legal marijuana industry in Hotchkiss. If these measures pass, it will be in the hands of our town council to establish the regulations and licensing procedures by Jan. 1, 2017. We have plenty of success stories in the marijuana industries on the Western Slope -- the path to success is laid out by these groundbreaking towns. We can follow their path to economic success.

The marijuana industry is well established in Delta County and has been for a very long time. A yes vote on these measures allows the Town of Hotchkiss to benefit economically from an industry that is already here. Last year taxable sales of recreational and medical marijuana reached $996 million in the state of Colorado. Almost a BILLION dollars. Towns all over the state of Colorado are benefiting from sales tax revenues from this rapidly growing industry. Hotchkiss can benefit too. It's the right thing to do for Hotchkiss. I encourage a yes vote on ballot measures 2A, 2B and 2C.
