Hotchkiss wrestlers win Eagle Valley mat tourney

The Hotchkiss Bulldogs are making statements about themselves with success everywhere they go. Their latest accomplishment is a huge win at last weekend's Eagle Valley Invitational. The Bulldogs blitzed the 23-team field with 237 points. Hotchkiss' closest competition was from Buena Vista which placed second with 137.5 points.
The Bulldogs placed four wrestlers on the top step of the awards podium. Beginning in the lower weights, Sergio Campos (14-4) earned a title at 113 pounds with his hard-fought 3-1 decision over Grand Valley's talented wrestler, A.J. Serna (16-3).
Colton Hall (17-3) continued his winning way at 132 with a pin against Buena Vista's Anthony Quintana (15-6).
Hotchkiss' third titlist was 160-pounder Wade Katzdorn (15-3) after his 6-3 decision over Steamboat Springs' Hayden Johnson (17-4).
The fourth top performer for the Bulldogs was Devin Curtis (14-4) who scored a major decision (12-1) against Soroco's Sky Carlson (13-6).
Hotchkiss gobbled up plenty of points with five second-place finishes in the tournament. Presley Pene, at 120, started the second-place parade after a 5-1 loss to Grand Valley's talented JT Latham.
Other second-place finishers for the Bulldogs included Colton Deluzio (7-4) at 138, Parker Katzdorn (7-7) at 182, Kevin Chavez (9-7) at 220 and Joseph Nault (10-3) at 285.
Hotchkiss' 106-pounder Landen Mayberry (10-3) led a trio of third place finishers. Chris Lovato (5-4) at 126 and Kaden Murray-Owens (7-10) at 170 pounds complete the list of third-place finishers.
Jamal Helm (3-2) was fourth at 113 and Jared Cantrell finished fourth at 170.
Hotchkiss will return to the mat this week with a triangular at Grand Valley (Parachute) on Jan. 12. The Bulldogs will face the Cardinals and Glenwood Springs.
Olathe will visit the Bulldogs on Jan. 18 for a match at 6 p.m.
