Photo by Hank Lohmeyer The community comes together on Saturday, July 29, for the annual Pioneer Town ice cream social.

Volunteers at Pioneer Town are getting ready for a cool, fun filled community summer break this weekend. The annual community ice cream social will be held at the Stolte Shed on Saturday, July 29, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

New this year will be a self-serve ice cream sundae bar. Guests to the event will have the chance to experience the meaning of this year's event theme -- "Pig Out Fun*Day Sundae" as they build their own personal favorite ice cream creations at the self-serve sundae bar.

The event's primary organizer Olie Mowers informs the DCI by e-mail, "I just got a call from the police department and they will be there with some firefighters and fire truck to help support the event and pie eating contest."

There will also be homemade delicacies -- cakes and pies -- donated by the many members, volunteers and friends of the Surface Creek Valley Historical Society and Pioneer Town.

As an added treat, admission to tours of the Pioneer Town museum complex will be one-half price for the day.

There are lots of activities being planned including a pie eating contest at 1 p.m., and games for kids and families at the Stolte Shed and over at the Grand Mesa Scenic Byway Welcome Center, too. Activities being planned are croquet, buckets and ball toss, bean bag toss, hula hoops, checkers/tic tac toe, new-pioneer fishin' hole, pick-up sticks, hop scotch, dominos, Jenga, and guess the number of cookies in the jar.

Eric Cooper, the highly popular card shark who performed at Night on the Town, will be in the Stolte Shed entertaining guests.

With the ice cream social running from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., everyone will have a chance to schedule their visit around whatever other activities the day may bring. It could serve as an ending of a day trip to the Grand Mesa and the Moose Day activities. Or, the social would make an ideal dessert stop after lunch for a refreshing diversion from the summer heat.

The event is one of Pioneer Town's community service and fundraising activities throughout the year that help support the mission of the Surface Creek Valley Historical Society.
