Carol Clawson and Tell did their best to make these yearling ewes follow the course at the 10th annual Hotchkiss Sheep Camp Stock Dog Trials over the weekend. Gordon Hebenstreit, president and general manager of the stock dog trials said, “We feel it was a very successful competition … It was a real challenge for the dogs.” Vice president Cheryl Hebenstreit noted, “The sheep were a little tough this year.” And that’s how the competitors like it.It had rained in Hotchkiss all week long. Not a good sign for the big outdoor events scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Gymkhana series begins May 29

Members of the Surface Creek Saddle Club met April 29 to finalize the schedule for the club's annual summer gymkhana series. Each gymkhana will include a barrel race, pole bending and flag race, and each night there will be a unique fun race.

Cedaredge youth is member of Angus Association

Jared Chappell, Cedar-edge, is a new junior member of the American Angus Association®, reports Bryce Schumann, CEO of the national organization with headquarters in Saint Joseph, Mo.

Junior members of the Association are eligible to register cattle in the American Angus Association, participate in programs conducted by the National Junior Angus Association and take part in Association-sponsored shows and other national and regional events.

Danger sign still posted after safety work on Gunnison River

a12_riverWhen finally open to recreational boaters, the stretch of Gunnison River past Hartland Diversion will still bear the upstream warning of "Extreme Danger."

Fears of potential liability have kept any of the agencies involved in the Hartland Diversion bypass project from authorizing removal of the riverside sign warning of danger ahead.

GMUG advises on closed roads

Many residents are experiencing warm weather and their focus is shifting to summer activities and a desire to head out into the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests. The Forest Service wants to remind recreational users that many forest roads remain closed to full-size vehicular traffic and have seasonal restrictions in place.

Noxious weed now blooming in Cedaredge

Myrtle spurge (Euphorbia myrsinites) is currently blooming in neighborhoods west of Cedaredge. This weed is in the same family as the highly invasive leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula).
