Carol Clawson and Tell did their best to make these yearling ewes follow the course at the 10th annual Hotchkiss Sheep Camp Stock Dog Trials over the weekend. Gordon Hebenstreit, president and general manager of the stock dog trials said, “We feel it was a very successful competition … It was a real challenge for the dogs.” Vice president Cheryl Hebenstreit noted, “The sheep were a little tough this year.” And that’s how the competitors like it.It had rained in Hotchkiss all week long. Not a good sign for the big outdoor events scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

City explains tree removal

The City of Delta has removed trees on West 5th Street due to tree roots lifting sidewalks. The city crews will be replacing the sidewalks during the City of Delta's concrete replacement program.

Gymkhana series begins May 29

Members of the Surface Creek Saddle Club met April 29 to finalize the schedule for the club's annual summer gymkhana series. Each gymkhana will include a barrel race, pole bending and flag race, and each night there will be a unique fun race.

Minority producers invited to join registry

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) invites minority farmers and ranchers in Delta County and across the nation to voluntarily join the USDA Minority Farm Register to receive information and opportunities from USDA agencies.

"The new Minority Farm Register is an outreach tool to reach underserved farmers and ranchers who are not currently enrolled in USDA loan, farm or conservation programs," said Alan Bull, Delta County FSA county executive director.

Several local Angus producers have been included in the American Angus Association's annual Pathfinder Report.

Michael L Ripp, Delta, has five registered Angus cows included in the association's 2012 Pathfinder® Report.

A newly formed organization, Colorado Ag Leadership Program (CALP), is dedicated to enhancing leadership capabilities of those committed to the future of Colorado's agriculture and rural communities.

CALP is a hands-on program that will recruit enthusiastic Coloradoans involved in agriculture, agribusiness, rural industries, rural communities or natural resource management.

Arla Nelson enjoyed a tour of the KUSA Channel 9 News building. She‘s pictured above with the evening anchor team.
On Jan. 21 and 22, Delta County junior princess Tess Gore and princess Arla Nelson went to the National Western Stock Show in Denver to volunteer their time and represent Delta County.

One of their activities was a tour of the KUSA Channel 9 News building. Arla was able to make the tour, but Tess and her family got held up in traffic and missed it.
