Carol Clawson and Tell did their best to make these yearling ewes follow the course at the 10th annual Hotchkiss Sheep Camp Stock Dog Trials over the weekend. Gordon Hebenstreit, president and general manager of the stock dog trials said, “We feel it was a very successful competition … It was a real challenge for the dogs.” Vice president Cheryl Hebenstreit noted, “The sheep were a little tough this year.” And that’s how the competitors like it.It had rained in Hotchkiss all week long. Not a good sign for the big outdoor events scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Gymkhana series begins May 29

Members of the Surface Creek Saddle Club met April 29 to finalize the schedule for the club's annual summer gymkhana series. Each gymkhana will include a barrel race, pole bending and flag race, and each night there will be a unique fun race.

Soil health projects catch senator’s eye

Innovative farming practices being developed by Uncompahgre Valley producers hold the promise of resource conservation and improved water quality.

Some of the work in this local soil health initiative attracted a U.S. senator here last week to meet with forward-looking producers and see an example of the projects that are being installed.

Canal closed to public

The Uncompahgre Valley Water Users Association is notifying the public that the South Canal will be closed to public access from Miguel Road to below tunnel one (2.5 miles downstream from Miguel Road) in preparation for work on the South Canal hydroelectric project.

In 2012, the USDA is again investing $50 million in funding for the EQIP Organic Initiative, which provides a 75% share of the estimated cost of implementing organic conservation measures to those who qualify–90% for beginning, limited-resource and socially-disadvantaged farmers and ranchers.

Sheep initiative launched to grow flocks

The U.S. sheep industry is finding itself amidst an encouraging time: lamb prices are at an all-time high, the wool market is the highest it's been since 1989 and the cull ewe and pelt markets are very lucrative. However, from the farm gate through to the lamb and wool processing level, there is a shared concern about meeting the demand for lamb and wool production in the United States.
