Limon ousts Hotchkiss

The Lady Badgers had too much defense for Hotchkiss as they eliminated the Lady Bulldogs from the 2A state tournament with a 41-29 victory.In their first year in Class 2A, the Hotchkiss Lady Bulldogs basketball team finished third in Western Slope district standings. Hotchkiss advanced to Region 2 competition at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling last Friday, where it ended its season with a 41-29 loss to Limon.

Limon (17-6 overall, 6-1 Union Pacific League) lost in Saturday's regional championship game to the defending state champion Akron Rams (24-0, 10-0 Lower Platte League) by a score of 69-18.

This year's Class 2A Elite 8 state tournament will be void of any Western Slope teams. Three other teams, Paonia, Rangely and Meeker, also advanced to regional competition, and all three teams were eliminated.

Limon proved to be too much for the Lady Bulldogs in the first-round game as they fell 41-29. The loss eliminated Hotchkiss from this year’s state 2A state basketball championships.Under first-year head coach Eric Hollembeak, Hotchkiss finished the season with a 14-9 overall and 6-3 record in the 12-team Western Slope League. This is the first year since 2010 that the Lady Bulldogs have posted a winning record.
