At last year's game between Hotchkiss and Olathe, Bulldog sophomore Alex Smith made two interceptions and was in on two tackles in the Bulldogs' 34-13 non-conference win. This year, Smith stole the show, running for 177 yards and four touchdowns in 23 carries.
Devan Rupe threw for 99 yards in 10 passes, including one interception on the opening possession. The junior first-year quarterback also found a little room to run, gaining 59 yards and one touchdown in 11 carries.
A short, low punt by Olathe early in the second period gave Hotchkiss possession on the Pirates' 29-yard line, setting up the first Smith TD, a one-yard run to the outside. With less than two minutes remaining in the half, Rupe managed a shovel pass to Smith from four yards out to give Hotchkiss a 0-20 halftime lead.
Olathe's first score came five minutes into the third quarter when a botched punt was recovered in the end zone by Pirate Tristen Jones.
Hotchkiss answered with a 9-yard touchdown run by Rupe to give Hotchkiss a 26-7 lead with 3:53 remaining in the third quarter.
The game continued in favor of Hotchkiss. The Bulldogs recovered a Pirate fumble on the 1-yard line, setting up the second 1-yard TD run for Smith. Rupe connected with Ross LeValley on the two-point conversion.
Duncan Turnbull had one carry for 47 yards, five solo and 10 total tackles, and two defended passes.
A 60-yard fourth-quarter drive by the Pirates resulted in an 8-yard touchdown by Trenton Piatt.
The Bulldogs travel to Buena Vista (1A Tri-Peaks League) this Friday. The Demons topped Alamosa, 39-34, Friday, and were the 2012 runners-up at state.
