The Hotchkiss tennis team claimed a 5-2 win Friday over visiting Cedaredge. The Bruins had success at three singles, with Ryan Bowen defeating Kaleb Bayles, 4-6, 2-6, and at one doubles, with the team of Landon Eckhart and Garrett Peterson winning a three-set match over Keegan Burke and Josiah Spano, 6-4, 6-7 (9-11), 5-10.
At two singles, Michael Wilmore played to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Austin Bowen. At two doubles Ulises Mendoza and Alex Hulteen, filling in for Luke Yerion, defeated Gus Sandels and Vincent Welsh, 6-2, 6-3. At three doubles, Tyler Suppes and Josh Parsons topped Joe Marah and Kerry Ribbons in straight sets. The four doubles team of Ethan Eller and Eddie Cambria defeated Thomas Huggett and Aaron Good, 6-0, 6-0.
Cedaredge one singles player Dario Melgoza, a sophomore from Delta High School, lost his opening set to Azure Eller, 6-2. Melgoza opened the second set with a 3-0 lead, and Eller was able to pull ahead for a 6-4 win.
Cedaredge will host a re-match against Hotchkiss on Sept. 12.
The Bulldogs lost their first match of the season, falling 3-4 at Cortez. The "match of the day," said head coach Brian Benson, was at two doubles. Hulteen and Mendoza won the first set, 6-4, and trailed 4-1 in set No. 2, "... before rallying to force a second-set tiebreaker," said Benson. They lost the tiebreaker, "then fought back in the third set 10-point super-tiebreaker to win the set and the match, 12-10." Both players had outstanding clutch shots throughout the match, added Benson.
Bayles had the only win at singles for Hotchkiss with a 6-2, 6-2 score. At four doubles, Ethan Eller and Eddie Cambria won, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).
On Aug. 27, Hotchkiss defeated Montrose, 7-0. All seven wins were in straight sets. Benson said the win was "unusual," considering that Montrose has a history of winning against Hotchkiss. "The combination of losing seven seniors from last year's team, a new coach, and a lot of new, inexperienced players were contributing factors," said Benson.
Hotchkiss travels to Grand Junction High School this Thursday. Cedaredge faced Montrose Tuesday night. It travels to Cortez this Saturday.blog comments powered by Disqus
