Speaker-designate Mark Ferrandino has appointed Rep. Millie Hamner (D-Dillon) as chairwoman of the House Education Committee.

Rep. Cherylin Peniston (D-Westminster) will be Rep. Hamner's vice chair on the committee, which monitors issues involving K-12 public schools, including public school accountability and school finance; and higher education, including administration and governance, tuition and financial assistance.

The committee has legislative oversight responsibility for the departments of education and higher education.

"I have worked in the Colorado educational system for over 30 years, and education has been one of my main priorities since becoming a legislator," Rep. Hamner said. "I am excited to tackle the issues that face our school systems and am confident that we can make real progress in improving our schools."

In January, Rep. Hamner will begin her second term in the state legislature. Last year she sponsored the READ Act, which implemented new guidelines ensuring early childhood literacy.

Rep. Hamner began her career in Colorado public education as a teacher and administrator in the Eagle County School District in 1978. She taught and served the Eagle County School District for 23 years before being asked to become assistant superintendent of the Summit School District in the fall of 2001. She was promoted to superintendent in March 2004.
