UVWUA warns of water shortage

The Uncompahgre Valley Water Users Association (UVWUA) at its regular February board meeting discussed in great depth the drought outlook for the upcoming growing season. With the snowpack well below average, and storage water also being below normal this year, several major decisions were made.

The Gunnison Tunnel will not be turned on until April 1 at the earliest and with the forecast at present, UVWUA will be delivering well below 100% water for the 2013 growing season. It was also decided that due to lack of water, pump contracts for "rented water" will not be renewed this year. Water that is attached to the land and delivered by pump will be allowed. UVWUA will send out a newsletter in mid-March with the current forecast information at that time, and an update on the outlook for the season.
