Many elderly veterans live in their own homes despite safety concerns and lack of support. Medical foster home caregivers are private citizens who open up their homes and their hearts to provide nurturing home environments for our veterans.
Medical foster homes are designed to keep veterans in the least restrictive living environment while still providing an appropriate level of care.
Care provided in a medical foster home setting can range from assisting with activities of daily living (examples: meal preparation, dressing, bathing, etc.) to 24-hour-a-day care.
Medical foster homes are available to qualified veterans as an alternative to an assisted living facility or nursing home.
Medical foster home caregivers receive support and oversight from the home based primary care team that delivers care for the veteran in the home. The team is made up of a physician, nurse practitioners, nurses, occupational therapist, social worker, dietitian, psychologist and recreational therapist. Caregivers act as the "eyes and ears" for the medical team and become a key participant in the patient's care.
Medical foster homes are privately owned or rented by community caregivers. These caregivers reside in the home and provide care for up to two veterans in the home. The expectation is of a long-term arrangement between the veteran and the caregiver. Each potential home will be inspected by a VA interdisciplinary inspection team prior to being admitted to the program. At this time, applications are being encouraged from homes within 70 miles of the Grand Junction VA Medical Center.
Caregivers who are accepted to the program are paid directly by the veteran and financial assistance may be available to veterans who qualify.
Currently, there is one veteran happily placed in Delta County. One home remains available in Rifle. The program hopes to open additional homes to make this option more widespread in all areas within 70 miles of the Grand Junction VA Medical Center.
