On Saturday, June 1, kids aged 2-16 participated in this year's Youth Fishing Derby, held at Confluence Lake as part of Delta's fourth annual Outdoor Heritage Day.
The "Pathway to Fishing" program was carried out this year by Colorado Sportsmen Wildlife Fund.
Volunteers manned learn-to-fish stations where kids were taught casting, knot tying, ethics, aquatic ecology and fish habitat. They gave away 250 free fishing poles to kids participating in the stations. This year's derby was judged according to the "longest fish" in each age group, and then for the smallest fish, all ages. The 2013 winners follow. Two age brackets tied. All winners received a trophy, a certificate and a prize.
Age 2 and under — Lily Abeyta, 13.5" trout.
