The Valley Symphony Association released its schedule of concerts for 2013-14 along with the disappointing news that all performances, with the exception of one, will take place in Montrose only.
VSA has presented symphonic and choral concerts in Delta and the North Fork for many years.
Normally, the concert has been presented at the Delta Center for Performing Arts and Education on Friday night, with the same program taking place at the Montrose Pavilion on Sunday afternoon.
In a letter to patrons, VSA president David DeVinny said attendance at the Delta performances has dipped to the extent it is raising concerns about VSA's ongoing financial viability. To keep the organization afloat, the board agreed to make some difficult changes.
Aside from financial concerns, the board has heard from musicians and chorus members that it is discouraging to perform before the small audiences in Delta. Additionally, the venue in Delta is unsatisfactory, particularly lighting and acoustics.
"This is a problem that is difficult to remedy in that there are no other feasible venues available in the area," DeVinny said. "Therefore, with much regret, the board has decided that, starting with the 2013-14 season, the Delta performances, with the exception of the Christmas concert in December 2013, would be suspended."
He continued, "The board will continue to revisit this issue from time to time and if, in the future, it becomes feasible to resume additional performances in Delta, we will be sure to reconsider our performance schedule and venues. It cannot be stated too strongly that this decision was made reluctantly and only due to economic factors that posed an imminent risk to the future existence of the organization."
VSA will continue its free, annual "Pops in the Park" presentation in Cedaredge. The concert and an ice cream social will be held at Cedaredge Town Park at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7. A second performance will take place Sunday, Sept. 8, at 3 p.m. at The Bridges Clubhouse in Montrose to kick off the association's 43rd concert season.
Other performances include:
Full orchestra concert — Saturday, Oct. 27, at 3 p.m. at the Montrose Pavilion.
Christmas by Candlelight V (combined concert by the orchestra and chorus) — 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, at the Montrose Pavilion; Sunday, Dec. 8, 3 p.m., at Delta Performing Arts Center.
