A concerned citizen called the Delta County Sheriff's Office last week to report that between 50 and 100 chickens had been abandoned about 10 miles up Stevens Gulch Road. While launching an investigation into who might have released the chickens, Delta County Sheriff Fred McKee said his office called local animal welfare organizations to see if they would accept the chickens, if they could be rounded up.
No organization was equipped to handle chickens.
On Sunday, a deputy went back to Stevens Gulch and found a few carcasses, but no live chickens and no evidence they had fallen prey to a wild animal.
"Hopefully the word spread and someone picked up the chickens," Sheriff McKee said.
The sheriff's office has a suspect and, as soon as McKee is satisfied they have enough evidence to prosecute, they will charge the individual with cruelty to animals.blog comments powered by Disqus
