Family mentoring has now been available to children in challenging circumstance in Delta County for 15 years. The first organizing board of directors meeting took place on Oct. 9, 1998.
This community effort has come a long way since then as it is now serving 60 deserving Delta County children who are participating in the Families Plus comprehensive prevention and treatment program. In this program, children and their families are provided with a wide range of support to help them grow up healthy. As far as is known, this homegrown Delta County program exists nowhere else in the country with the blending of parents, volunteers and professionals all determined that children will learn to be healthy.
The investment the citizens of Delta County are making in children is truly astounding. From Aug. 1, 2012, through July 2013, mentors invested 5,968 hours with children which is valued at $133,862. During this same time period, $11,511 worth of needed supplies for the children and their families was donated by community members. In 2012, Families Plus therapists made 2,052 contacts within the community on behalf of the children enrolled in the program. More details about the program can be found at FamiliesPlus.net.
Birthday balloons are going out around Delta County to commemorate community efforts to help children and to draw attention to the ever increasing need from volunteers, mentors, donors and children for this most forward-looking of causes. The philosophy at Families Plus is that all the children participating can grow up to be healthy contributing citizens of the future if community members get behind their successes.
