A Minnesota hunter was airlifted from Grand Mesa Thursday, Oct. 17, after complaining of severe chest pain and a high fever.
Reed Beckler, 68, of Shakopee, Minn., was hunting in the Green Mountain area.
A friend called 911 from Jim Bryce's hunting camp with the coordinates. Delta County Sheriff Fred McKee says CareFlight responded from Montrose, but found the coordinates were incorrect. They located Beckler at 1 p.m., just as a snowstorm began to arrive and weather conditions deteriorated, preventing a landing. Six members of Delta County Search & Rescue, including an EMT, headed that direction on foot and on horseback, carrying oxygen and medication. Upon arrival they determined they would not be able to extract Beckler without the helicopter. They provided better coordinates and with a break in the weather, CareFlight was able to go directly to Beckler's location. He was transported to Montrose Memorial Hospital where he underwent surgery. Sheriff McKee reports he is on the road to recovery.
According to the sheriff, Beckler rode his ATV to the vicinity of Jim Bryce's hunting camp, then walked in. He planned to walk back out to his ATV.blog comments powered by Disqus
