Delta-Montrose Electric Association (DMEA) warns members of a utility scam.
Over recent days, including a weekend when DMEA was closed, members have been receiving phone calls from someone posing as a representative from DMEA.
The caller states that electricity will be disconnected if the person does not pay on their delinquent amount immediately.
The imposter has been calling from an 800 number. Authorities have been contacted and are aware of the situation.
If any members receive a call regarding their electric utilities, please verify that it is a call from the actual DMEA number of 1-877-687-3632 or 249-4572.
On one occasion, the caller attempted to send a member to Walmart to purchase a pre-paid card and asked them to call a fake 800 number providing the pre-paid card information so there is no trail of where the payment goes.
They may also simply ask for credit card information, so please do not provide any account information until you verify you are speaking with an actual DMEA representative.
DMEA was alerted of the scam by several different members and it appears the primary targets are businesses, specifically restaurants.
Please report any additional information regarding this scam to 1-877-687-3632 or 249-4572.blog comments powered by Disqus
