Last week the Delta County Health Department recognized its ninth Baby & Me graduate. Pictured with health department employees Karen O’Brien and Kelly Beard are Barbara Chernault and her daughter Airabella, who will turn one year old on Jan. 4. Chernault enrolled in the Baby & Me program for the diapers and quit smoking about 1 1/2 years ago. Airabella’s dad came for all the classes and soon after he decided to quit too. Now both remain smoke free and are dedicated to raising Airabella in a smoke-free environment. “Initially I enrolled in the Baby & Me program for the diapers,” Chernault said. “It was a big incentive and covered all of Airabella’s diapers for one year, but what really kept me from smoking was knowing I was keeping my baby healthy.” This has been huge for both parents since they both smoked for about 10 years and smoked 1 1⁄2 packs per day. Chernault said she felt more stressed when she smoked than she does now, and she believes she’s quit for good. She has already referred a friend to the program.
