The last Wednesday in June turned out to be a fun-filled day on the water for all the kids waiting in the Partners program. The BLM river rangers and Partners of Delta, Montrose and Ouray counties collaborated to make a river fun day for all the kids who don't have mentors yet. The kids were fitted with life jackets, given life-skill lessons on river safety and encouraged to use water toys to have fun and get wet on the Gunnison River between Escalante and Bridgeport. It was a full day of sun and adventure including a picnic lunch on the side of the river, skipping rocks and practicing social skills with other kids. The BLM river rangers had a great combination of patience and enthusiasm for the river environment which the kids found irresistible. Every one of the Partners kids and staff were impressed by the rangers' knowledge and preparedness.
Partners of Delta, Montrose and Ouray is a non-profit organization dedicated to building one-to-one mentoring partnerships between young people and responsible caring adults. Spending an average of three hours a week with a local child, volunteers have a supported opportunity to make a positive difference in the life of a child. Partners asks for a commitment of one year, but many partners become friends for life. People who will take the time to listen, understand, share experiences and who want to become a friend to a young person should seriously consider becoming a mentor for Partners.
