The members of Delta Elks Lodge #1235 made Christmas warmer and friendlier for the community's senior citizens this year by donating a dinner that was held on Christmas Eve at the Delta Senior Center.
On the following Christmas Day, the Delta community displayed the holiday spirit and its generous heart again as a community Christmas dinner was hosted at the United Methodist Church where some 200 meals were served.
At the seniors' Christmas Eve event, attendance was about 80 people who turned out for the high-spirited noon meal that featured ham and all the holiday trimmings that make a memorable Christmas feast.
Elks member Doug Eades attended the event with the seniors and said this year it was made possible by some grant monies the local lodge had received. Lodge members are hopeful they will be able to help stage the free Christmas dinner for the seniors next year also, Eades added.
The Delta Seniors handed out goodie bags to attendees and also did all the meal preparation, serving, and cleanup.
Volunteers of America meal site supervisor Joann Ross took a day away from her own Christmas Eve activities to donate time in the kitchen helping with the seniors' dinner.
Other senior volunteers who helped put on the event were Frieda Goings who helped Eades with shopping chores, Betty Zavadil, Lisa Riem, Margaret Bakeman, Barbara Hedges, Linda Burrell, Emily Gallegos, Doris Myers and Angie Helmericks.
"We are all just very appreciative for the generosity of the Elks," Helmericks said.
Though Volunteers of America has cut its noon hot lunch program in Delta from five days a week to three, the Delta Seniors organization hasn't slowed down in its mission of enhancing the lives and health of local seniors. Delta Seniors have stepped up and taken on responsibility themselves to fill the gap.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the organization hosts a noon "soup kitchen" at the center on Meeker Street.
For $2.50, seniors can come in at noon as always, socialize with friends as always, and enjoy a noon meal as always, based around homemade soup prepared by volunteers from the Delta Seniors organization.blog comments powered by Disqus
