Jardons celebrate 72nd anniversary

a04 jardonEdith and Duke JardonDurward "Duke" and Edith Jardon, longtime Delta residents, will celebrate their 72nd wedding anniversary on Dec. 23.

The Jardons met at Bethel Hospital in Colorado Springs, where Duke did maintenance and Edith worked on the switchboard and in the office.

Family members were not able to make it to a wedding, so Duke and Edith went to Raton, N.M., to exchange vows.

In 1946, the Jardons moved to the home in Delta which they still occupy. It was a coming home for Edith, a 1937 Delta High School graduate. Duke graduated from high school in Colorado Springs, also in 1937, but had relatives in Hotchkiss.

Just out of the service, Duke found work at the canning factory for a little while. He later worked for the city municipal light and power department and then Western Area Power Administration in Montrose. For 50 years he maintained fire extinguishers for clients throughout Delta County and beyond. He was a volunteer fireman for 38 years.

Edith kept busy raising three active boys. The oldest, Reginald, lives in Oak Grove, Calif. Craig, the middle son, is a resident of Arvada. Travis lives in Hotchkiss. They have eight grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

When asked the secret to their long marriage, Edith said, "We just get along. We have our times, but we try to please each other."

Seventy-two years of marriage seemed to add up very quickly, she said. "It gets there in a hurry, especially as you get older."
