When Subway in Hotchkiss opened up a contest for a mural, Chris Allen came up with a design. Following contest guidelines, he included the business fronts as seen from Subway, and Lamborn and Land's End mountains in his design.
The iconic Hotchkiss Bulldogs mascot is gripping a Subway sandwich between his fangs. To be true to his own style, he added colorful graffiti-style lettering to his design.
Allen's design won, and in May, Hotchkiss High School art students Alex Smith, Wesley Hardin, Daryl Batt, Brook Tutor, Kyle Tutor, Kellie Jones, Morgan Dodie and Anna Steckel, all students of art teacher Jamie Roeber, painted the mural.
Allen's bulldog was inspired by Roeber's murals that grace the walls of the Hotchkiss gym. "The sandwich and the bulldog just kind of went together," he said. "The main street and the mountains, obviously, I think, represent Hotchkiss pretty well."
Allen, a senior at HHS, said he was inspired to learn to draw with pencil in fourth grade by a friend who was really good at it. He learned from step-by-step, how-to books. "You know, the ones with little animals."
Between the books and lots of practice, he got pretty good. His favorite medium remains colored pencil and pencil drawings, and his inspiration comes from being outdoors (he doesn't care much for TV) and sports.
A National Honors Society member, Allen said he also enjoys science and history. And he plays football and basketball for HHS. He has his eye on Harvard after falling love with the campus while attending a football camp there this summer. He plans to major in either graphic design or business, with the goal of going into an art-related field. He'd like to do portrait sketches, and wants to try his hand at more murals. He already was offered a commission for a mural in Crawford. That fell through, he said, but he's enthusiastic that other offers will follow.
Allen also helped paint the bulldog on the front of the Public Works building on Bridge Street. His works have been displayed at the Blue Sage Center for the Arts in Paonia, The AppleShed in Cedaredge and the Creamery in Hotchkiss.blog comments powered by Disqus
