U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Phaelen French placed third in Robins AFA Museum of Aviation Half Marathon Saturday, Jan. 18.
French, a former Air Force Academy intercollegiate track athlete and a Delta High school runner, started this year's training schedule with this race.
The race was held on her own Air Force base. Out of 460 entries, she placed 27th overall. She was the third woman and first active servicewoman to cross the finish line. She uses half marathons and other runs as preparation for future triathlons.
French has entered several Olympic and sprint distance triathlons this spring with the goal of earning a position on the Elite Air Force Triathlon Team. "I am slightly ahead of my goals judging from last year's performance," French said. "In Texas I won a half marathon with a slower time on a winding course. This was a faster race with twice the people. Running is my strength so I focus my training on that. My swim has significantly improved as I started training with local swim teams. The teams help make me become more efficient in the water. As a power runner my overall strength prepares me for the bike. Later in the spring I will focus more on the bike, but right now I want to focus on building my endurance base and my swimming technique."
Lieutenant French's personal coach, "Coach D," posts her workouts on Google Calendar for her to follow. "Coach D has made my workouts for 15 years and knows me the best," she said.
Florida's Great Clermont Triathlon in March is likely to be French's first for this season, but there will be several training races and cycling events before then.blog comments powered by Disqus
