Harold Sand of Cedaredge died Sunday, May 13, 2012, at his home. He was 84.
A memorial service will be held Friday, May 25, at 2 p.m. at Cedar Creek Cemetery in Montrose.
Mr. Sand was born May 14, 1927, in Grand Forks, N.D., to Oscar and Ina (Le Doux) Sand. He spent his childhood on Spring Creek Mesa near Montrose.
He joined the Navy when he was 17 and served four years in the Pacific. In 1948 he reenlisted with the United States Marine Corps, seeing battle as a tank commander at Chosin Reservoir in the Korean Conflict. He was discharged in 1952.
Mr. Sand completed a four-year carpentry apprenticeship in Milwaukee, Wis. He worked as a solo custom home builder in Portland, Ore., in the 1960s. In the early 1970s he and his family moved to Saudi Arabia for a two-year contract and then he worked an additional year in Bahrain alone. After returning to the United States he worked for Elstrom Brothers in Portland, Ore, building the city's leading custom homes in the 1980s. They moved from Oregon to the Front Range in 1983, before moving to Cedaredge in 2000. He enjoyed traveling, the outdoors and satisfaction in a job well done.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lois Sand; three daughters, Kristina Sand of New York, Colleen Sand of Loveland, and Lori McCuskey and her husband Troy of Loveland; and a sister, Joyce of Rochester, Minn.
Mr. Sand was preceded in death by two brothers, Rene and Eric; and six sisters, Audrey, Guri, Karen, Ila Dean, Tanis and Rose.
