Boyd Cornell

Boyd Weldon Cornell of Cedaredge died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011, at his home. He was 82.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Jan. 6, at 2 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Cedaredge.

Mr. Cornell was born Aug. 27, 1929, in Compton, Calif., to Clifton and Myrtle (Hale) Cornell. He spent his childhood in Compton, Calif., and Cedaredge, graduating from Cedaredge High School in 1948.

He married Betty Marshall on July 24, 1948, in Cedaredge. They celebrated 63 years of marriage. She survives.

Mr. Cornell was a park manager for the Colorado State Park system for many years. He was instrumental in starting Sweitzer Lake State Park. He built Lathrop State Park near Walsenberg, worked at Navajo State Park near Arboles and helped build Rifle Gap/Rifle Falls State Park. He was a member of the Odd Fellows and the Masons. He lived in Rifle before moving to Cedaredge 20 years ago.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, water skiing, scuba diving and finding out where roads went.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Cornell of Cedaredge; three sons, Bill Cornell of Lillian, Ala., Roger Cornell and Gary Cornell, both of Cedaredge; six grandchildren, James, Tim, Brandi, Bryan, Andy and Mike; and seven great-grandchildren, Amelia, Kaleb, Logan, Taylor, Paul, Ryan and Alyssa.

Mr. Cornell was preceded in death by a brother, Melville Cornell; and a half brother, Paul Kehl.
