Phyllip Beckley

a08_beckleyPhyllip M. Beckley of Surface Creek died Oct. 2, 2012, at his home in Cedaredge. He was 87.

A funeral service was held Oct. 6 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Delta. Burial followed at the Cedaredge Cemetery.

Mr. Beckley was born to Morton and Helen (Hepworth) Beckley on Sept. 13, 1925, in Cedaredge. He spent his childhood in Cedaredge and graduated from Cedaredge High School in 1943.

During World War II Mr. Beckley served with the U.S. Navy as a certified diesel and jet engine mechanic.

On Sept. 4, 1948, he married Emma Altergott in Chicago, Ill. They lived in Denver for over 20 years before retiring in Cedaredge. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary before Emma died on Dec. 23, 2006.

Mr. Beckley, a retired diesel mechanic, enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching sports. He was a member of the Surface Creek Lions Club, a lifetime member of the Grand Mesa VFW Post 9221 and a lifetime member of the MOC.

He is survived by his daughters, Linda Whitaker and her husband Robert of Denver, Judith Spoerl and her husband Charles of Grand Junction and Debra Merkle and her husband Alan of Bennett; a twin sister, Phyllis Loucks of Fort Collins; four grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Emma Beckley; and five brothers.

Memorial contributions may be made to the stained glass project at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1000 Pioneer Road, Delta, CO 81416.
