Joseph Michael "Mike" Thomas died at his home in Austin on Nov. 12, 2012. He was 72.
A celebration of life service was held on Nov. 16 at the Delta United Methodist Church, with Rev. Siaosi Prescott officiating. A private interment was held at the Cory Cemetery.
Joseph Michael Thomas was born on Sept. 6, 1940, in Delta to Joe and Loraine (Schaublin) Thomas. He spent his childhood in Santa Cruz, Calif., Montrose and Delta. He graduated from Delta High School in 1959.
He was a meat cutter and meat manager for several major grocery stores before working in real estate in Northridge, Calif. When he moved back to Austin in 1979 he worked as the service manager for Pollard Brothers in Montrose. For several years he helped his father-in-law farm.
Mr. Thomas was a member of the Delta United Methodist Church and the Methodist Men and enjoyed serving on the Invocation and Caring Committee.
He was a member of the Orchard City Irrigation District, Grand Mesa Water Conservancy, Fogg Ditch Company and Water Enhancement Authority and served many years on the Cory Cemetery District.
Mr. Thomas enjoyed racing a 1973 Dodge Dart F/Stock automatic and was a member of the National Hot Rod Association.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marsha of Austin; two sons, Mitchell Thomas of Grand Junction and Matthew Thomas and his wife Melony (Antal) of Port Orange, Fla.; brother, William Thomas and his wife Charlotte of Cedaredge; four grandchildren, Caleb, Josh, Alik and Ashleigh; and three great-grandchildren.
