Merlin H. Mohning died Nov. 12, 2012, at his home outside of Hotchkiss. He was 89.
A memorial service was held at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Paonia Nov. 14. Interment was at Rest Haven Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars, Iowa.
Mr. Mohning was born March 2, 1923, on the family farm in Marion Township, Plymouth County, Iowa, to L.H. and Wilhelmina (Wiebke) Mohning. He graduated from Le Mars High School in Le Mars, Iowa, in 1941. He married Anna "Marge" Kuttler on June 22, 1947; they celebrated 65 years of marriage in June.
Mr. Mohning served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, served on the Le Mars, Iowa City Council for 10 years, was a charter member of the Le Mars Sertoma Service Club and a lifetime member of the Wilson Head American Legion Post #97 in Paonia. He was a longtime owner of Le Mars Hatchery and Feed until he sold the business in 1982 and retired to Hotchkiss. During retirement he spent time as a custodian at Paonia High School and maintained a 10-acre orchard near Hotchkiss.
He enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, golfing and reading. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars, Iowa, and Immanuel Lutheran Church in Paonia.
Mr. Mohning is survived by his wife, Marge; children, Evelyn Roseberry and her husband Bill of Hotchkiss, Don Mohning and his wife Sue of Salix, Iowa, Janet Murray and her husband Don of Rapid City, S.D., Lois Rozman and her husband Rudy of Crested Butte and Paul Mohning and his wife Maxine of Pascagoula, Miss.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Louis Mohning and Ray Mohning; two sisters, Alverna Lowery and Esther Sjoboken.
He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
