Vollie Sanford Jr.

a07 sanfordDelta resident Vollie Sanford Jr. died Dec. 31, 2012. He was 84.

A private inurnment will be held at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado in Grand Junction. A memorial service will be held June 9. Details will be published closer to that date.

Vollie Sanford Jr. was born Sept. 27, 1928, in Calhoun, La., to Vollie and Lizzie Mae (Roan) Sanford Sr. He grew up in Calhoun, graduating from Calhoun High School. After graduation he joined the U.S. Air Force. He served four years and was honorably discharged.

He married Billie Jean Fulmer on Aug. 17, 1952, in Wasco, Calif.

In 1984 the couple moved to Delta County from Bakersfield, Calif., where he was a member of the Valley Baptist Church. He and Billie still watched the Sunday service via Skype. He was also a member of the Grand Mesa VFW Post #9221.

Mr. Sanford enjoyed his family and friends, camping, fishing, and volunteering with the Council Tree Pow Wow where he was a Volunteer of the Year in 2007.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Billie Sanford of Delta; his five children, Tamara Sanford of Portland, Ore., Adrian Gonzales and her husband Louis of Bakersfield, Calif., Donna Herod and her husband David, Vollie Ray Sanford and his wife Reylene, and Warren Sanford and his wife Chrystal, all of Delta; a brother, Kenneth "Sonny" Sanford of San Antonio, Texas; a half-brother, Donnie Sanford of Calhoun, La.; two sisters, Laurice Templeton and her husband Scott of Pearland, Texas, and Jo Miller of San Antonio, Texas; two half-sisters, Sherry Sanford and Linda Sanford, both of Calhoun, La., 20 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and a great-grandson on the way.


He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Arrangements are being handled by Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.
