Montrose resident Twilla Watkins died April 7, 2013, at Spring Creek Chalet in Montrose. She was 79.
Twilla Pope was born on Ash Mesa in Olathe Dec. 21, 1933, to Woodrow and Iva (Catt) Pope. She attended Columbine Country School and graduated from Olathe High School in 1952. She moved to Minnesota and attended Bible college. She moved to San Francisco, Calif., where she worked for Tidewater Oil and was selected "Miss Tidewater."
She married Charles Watkins in the Bay area.
Mrs. Watkins moved back to Log Hill in Colorado in 2006.
She enjoyed the views and the colors of the Rocky Mountains, especially the San Juans, watching deer, feeding birds, watering wildflowers, and genealogy. She was involved with Red Hats, the Log Hill Book Club and the Birthday Luncheon family and friends group and volunteered at the Ute Indian Museum.
Mrs. Watkins is survived by her children, Scott Watkins, Sheryl Haggblade and husband Ted, and Spencer Watkins; her grandchildren, Alex, Meghan and Ben of Plano, Texas; her brothers, Sid Pope and wife Margot of Ridgway, Larry Pope and wife Jan and Gary Pope and wife Nettie, all of Montrose; a sister-in-law, Louise Pope of Walsenburg; and several nieces and nephews and extended family.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Durane Pope.
A memorial service will be held June 2 from 2-5 p.m. at the home of Scott Watkins, 630 Snowy Peaks Drive in Montrose.
