Hotchkiss resident Margaret "Mickey" Brodel died Sunday, April 21, 2013, at Delta County Memorial Hospital. She was 89.

Margaret "Mickey" Paustenbach was born in Medford, Wis., on Dec. 25, 1923. She married Frank Brodel in Seattle, Wash., on Dec. 23, 1944. In 1963, they moved from Steamboat Springs to Hotchkiss, where they built a home and started their family business, Farmer Franks.
Mrs. Brodel was an artistic woman and in her early years was a sought-after dress designer. She gave up her career to raise her family in accordance with her strong Catholic beliefs.
She enjoyed her family, sewing, cards, puzzles, playing games, her farm animals and the outdoor life. After retirement the Brodels spent time in Arizona.
Mrs. Brodel is survived by her husband of 69 years, Frank Brodel; three sons, Rick Brodel and wife Candy of Hotchkiss, Ken Brodel and wife Carol of Renton, Wash., and Martin Brodel of Hotchkiss; two daughters, Keita Davis and husband Cliff of Paonia and Mary Simon and husband Ken of Grand Junction; a sister, Ruth Miller of Wisconsin; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
