Letty Stenson died Monday, April 22, 2013, in Palisade. She was 92.
Letty Alice Matz was born Feb. 8, 1921, in Cleveland, Ohio. She was raised on the family farm in Michigan.
After completing her education, she joined the U.S. Navy and served in World War II, stationed in Alameda, Calif. She married George Fredrick Stenson on Feb. 9, 1944, in Alameda. He died of cancer on July 27, 1966, in New York.
Mrs. Stenson worked at Guideposts in Carmel, N.Y., from 1966 to 1967, when she transferred to Reader's Digest in Pleasantville, N.Y. She was the president of the chorus and an avid golfer for Reader's Digest. She retired in 1983.
In 2002 she moved to western Colorado to be near her family. She was a seamstress by trade. She also enjoyed traveling, swimming, playing two-handed pinochle, cooking, canning, gardening and playing the piano.
She is survived by her children, William Stenson and wife Sharon of Edwards, and Shirley Koch and husband Alan of Olathe; a son-in-law, Marshall Deasy of New Bloomfield, Penn.; seven grandchildren, Marshall Deasy and Steven Deasy, both of Harrisburg, Penn., Megan (Koch) Hess and husband Dustin of Montrose, Alan Koch of Delta, Dustin Koch of Olathe, Shane (Stenson) DeBourcy and husband Sean of Princeton, Iowa, Kelly (Stenson) Escorcia and husband Simon of Centennial; seven great-grandchildren, Peyton Hess, Bill Koch, Ava and Dylan Escorcia, Riley and Fin DeBourcy and Braedon Deason; and two sisters-in-law, Lillian Matz of Cleveland, Ohio, and Doris Matz of Missouri.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Alice Deasy; siblings Jack Matz, Don Matz, Dorothy "Dottie" Cuckler and husband Bernard.
