Dr. Richard W. Patterson died June 3, 2013, at his home in Paonia. He was 89.

Richard Westcott Patterson was born in Des Moines, Iowa, March 30, 1924, to Donald and Gertrude (Skully) Patterson. He spent his childhood traveling the country with his family and graduated from Des Moines High School. He received a bachelor's degree from University of Iowa and a doctorate from University of Iowa Medical School. He completed his residency at Columbia University, specializing in anesthesiology. He practiced medicine and taught at Columbia University in New York, N.Y., and University of California in Los Angeles, Calif.
In 1951 he married Betty Keas in Basel, Switzerland. They moved to Los Angeles, Calif., in 1972 where they lived until Betty's death.
Dr. Patterson moved to Paonia in 1995. He enjoyed local geography, history, sailing, story-telling and world travel. He authored a book, "The Head Behind the Hands."
He is survived by his children, Christina Patterson-Smith and husband Barry of Paonia, Susan Hughson of Turnersville, N.J., Richard Patterson of Colorado, Shirin Patterson of St. Lucia, and Dee Shearer of Maui, Hawaii; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; and a brother, Earl Patterson.
