Donald John Vigil died Aug. 11, 2013, at Delta County Memorial Hospital after a 4 1/2-year battle with renal cell cancer. He was 50.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 17, in the gymnasium at Delta High School.
He was born in Pueblo Dec. 6, 1962, to Moses and Rose Marie (Trujillo) Vigil. He spent his childhoold in Pueblo and graduated from East High School in 1981. He received an associate of arts degree in construction management at Pueblo Community College, a bachelor of science degree in technology education from Montana State University Bozeman, and a master's degree in educational administration from George Fox University in Newberg, Ore.
On April 29, 1988, he married Mary Powell. They celebrated 25 years of marriage this year.
Mr. Vigil taught technology and coached at North Bend Junior High in Oregon, was vice principal at Delta High School for four years and vice principal and a counselor at Cedaredge High School for two years. For the past six years he taught technology and woodshop at Delta High School. He coached football, basketball, tennis, baseball and softball and was a sponsor for LULAC and TSA.
He was a member of Ducks Unlimited, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, NRA and National Education Association. He enjoyed spending time with his family, playing many sports, especially softball, hunting, fishing, woodworking and building.
Mr. Vigil is survived by his wife, Mary Vigil of Delta; his sons, Michael Vigil and wife Deborah of Delta and Stephen Vigil of Fort Collins; his parents, Moses and Rose Marie Vigil of Pueblo; his brothers, Ed Vigil and wife Esther, and Mitchell Vigil, all of Pueblo; his sisters, Linda Sparling and husband Steve of Kendallville, Ind., Teresa Vialpando and husband Randy of Pueblo; two grandsons, Russell and Benjamin Vigil of Delta; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Donald Vigil Memorial Fund at Delta County Federal Credit Union, 1340 Highway 92, Delta, CO 81416. Funds will help offset high school sports fees.
