Wilma Ruth Rowland, a longtime resident of Rogers Mesa, died Aug. 21, 2013. She was born Sept. 29, 1921, in Arma, Kan., to Anna and George Cvelbar.
She graduated from Arma High School in 1939 and attended Kansas State Teachers College.
She married Raymond Rowland Aug. 14, 1941, in Iola, Kan. They recently celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary.
Mrs. Rowland worked at the Federal Census Bureau in Pittsburg, Kan., before moving to Elkhart, Kan., in 1966. After her husband's retirement, they moved to Rogers Mesa in 1978 and had a fruit orchard. Mrs. Rowland worked at Zack's BBQ where she was known for her pies. In 1993 they moved to their present home. Mrs. Rowland became ill in 2008 and spent her final days watching the birds, the deer and the mountains while enjoying fresh strawberries.
Cremation has taken place. A funeral service was held Aug. 27 at Hotchkiss Community United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the church at P.O. Box 576, Hotchkiss, CO 81419.

Mrs. Rowland is survived by her husband, Raymond; five children, Vernon and wife Donna of Blue Springs, Mo., Kathleen Hooper and husband Don of Leawood, Kan., Ron of Denver, Barry and wife Donna of Bradenton, Fla., and Brian of Houston, Texas; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary and Ann; three brothers, Joe, Frank and Bill; and a grandson, Michael.
