Roland "Shep" Porter Sheppard died Sept. 29, 2013, at Delta County Memorial Hospital. He was 94.
An open house memorial will be held Saturday, Oct. 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. at New Hope Church, 17464 Surface Creek Road in Cedaredge.
Mr. Sheppard was born in Joplin, Mo., May 15, 1919, to Wesley and Zula (Nunamaker) Sheppard. His family moved often while he was growing up during the Great Depression and he attended many different schools.
Mr. Sheppard enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1941. He was discharged from active duty in 1946.
He married Juanita "Nita" Wilson in February 1943 in Florida. They moved to California and then to Cedaredge in 1947. They were married over 56 years before her death in 1999.
He was a farmer, co-owner with his father of Shep's Bakery in Cedaredge and, in 1958, began growing blue spruce trees for landscaping.
Mr. Sheppard enjoyed fly fishing, hunting deer, being outdoors, playing liar's poker with the morning coffee crowd and bowling, winning awards at local and state levels.
He is survived by three daughters, Rosalind Berg, Marsha England and Stephanie Sheppard, all of Cedaredge; two grandchildren, Shauna DeMoss and husband Merle, and William "Bill" Hickox and wife Amy, all of Cedaredge; five great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Myrabel Carnaham of Michigan.
He was preceded in death by his wife and a sister, Ramona Young.blog comments powered by Disqus
