Former Austin resident Thelma Iola (Jackson) Steele died Dec. 2, 2013, at Bend, Ore. She was 93.
A graveside memorial service is pending at Mesa View Cemetery. Pastor Bob Watts and Garnet Chapter OES members will officiate. Mrs. Steele requested no flowers.
Thelma Iola Jackson was born near Kirk Nov. 28, 1920, to William and Rosa (Beezley) Jackson.
She grew up in Rifle and graduated from Rifle High School. She married Lance Steele on Oct. 11, 1941, in Meeker.
She was an active member of Garnet Chapter No. 39 Order of the Eastern Star before moving to Oregon. She was initiated in Temple Chapter, Denver, in 1956. She was an honorary member of Past Matrons Club of Delta, Austin First Baptist Church, Orchard City Women's Club and at least two garden clubs in the Orchard City area before moving to Bend, Ore., to be near her family.
Her interests included upholstering, gardening, art and reading. When her eyesight failed her she turned to recorded books.
Mrs. Steele is survived by her daughter, Janet (Wayne) Ray of Hot Springs, S.D.; two granddaughters, Jaime and Janel; sisters, Geri (Daniel) Wilkerson of Sunriver, Ore., and Norma Beeghly of Sandy, Ore.; brother, William Jackson Jr. of Nampa, Idaho; eight grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Taylor Funeral Home is handling the arrangements, with services provided by Pastor Bob Watts and Garnet Chapter OES members.
