Jose Leonides Chavez, a longtime resident of Delta, died Dec. 9, 2013, at Delta County Memorial Hospital. He was 68.
A rosary was recited Monday, Dec. 16, and a Mass of the Resurrection was held Tuesday, Dec. 17, both at St. Michael Catholic Church. Interment was at Mesa View Cemetery in Delta.
Mr. Chavez was born in El Pino, Zacatecas, Mexico, Jan. 14, 1945, to Jesus and Isabel (Nava) Chavez. He moved to Delta in 1972.
He married Tina Salazar in 1972.
He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, camping, his animals, playing at casinos, being at the ranch where he spent most of his days, singing with his son and spending quality time with his family.
Mr. Chavez worked in Naturita in the uranium mines for several years, at Western Tanning in Delta, Kiewit Western Construction in the Glenwood Springs canyon and at the LeValley Ranch in Hotchkiss.
He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Tina Chavez of Delta; five sons, Vincent (Lisa) Lopez, Larry (Angela) Lopez Jr., Jesus (Anita) Chavez and Carlos (Heather) Chavez, all of Delta, and Gustavo (Ester) Chavez of Carbondale; four daughters, Connie (Carlos) Rascon of Mesa, Ariz., Karen (Pablo) Rea and Isabel (Nacho) Beltran, all of Delta, and Paula (Mike) Borchini of Mariposa, Calif.; four brothers, Fernando (Manuela) Chavez and Ramiro (Elvira) Chavez, all of Delta, Manuel (Tonya) Chavez and Santos (Chayo) Chavez, all of Sinaloa, Mexico; two sisters, Rufina (Niko) Castro of Montrose and Chayo (Guadalupe) Chavez of Delta; 27 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his grandson, Santos Chavez.
Arrangements were handled by Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.
