Shirley Ochs died Jan. 4, 2014, in Delta. She was 80.
Shirley Agnes Burns was born in Alexandria Bay, N.Y., April 29, 1933, to Ishmael and Agnes Burns. She attended school in Alexandria Bay, N.Y., and graduated from Oswego State University in 1954 with a bachelor of science degree in education.
She taught elementary education in Illian, N.Y., Colorado Springs and Long Beach, Calif.
On Dec. 20, 1958, she married Donald Ochs in Las Vegas. They moved to Hotchkiss in 1978 and operated a fruit and Christmas tree farm.
Mrs. Ochs was a member of Mountain View Bible Church of Lazear. She was a member of the Music and Arts Club, the Harmony Club and, earlier, Beta Sigma Phi. She was the longest-serving member of the Hotchkiss Senior Citizens Center.
She enjoyed teaching, being a farmer's wife and homemaker, meeting people, playing bridge, Bible study and family gatherings.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Donald Ochs; her children, Stacy (Mark) Cool and Russell (Becky) Ochs, all of Hotchkiss; six grandchildren, Heather Cool, Matthew (Abigail) Cool, Andrew (Fran) Cool, Erica Ochs, Caleb Ochs and Landon Ochs; one great-grandchild, Tatum Cool; a brother, Donald (Linda) Burns of Los Alamos, N.M.; and sisters, Mary Young of Bridgewater, N.J., and Mary Ellen (Jim) Lyon of Bloomfield, N.Y.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 9, at Mountain View Bible Church in Lazear. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Hotchkiss.
