Sun shone brightly on dog trials
Carol Clawson and Tell did their best to make these yearling ewes follow the course at the 10th annual Hotchkiss Sheep Camp Stock Dog Trials over the weekend. Gordon Hebenstreit, president and general manager of the stock dog trials said, “We feel it was a very successful competition … It was a real challenge for the dogs.” Vice president Cheryl Hebenstreit noted, “The sheep were a little tough this year.” And that’s how the competitors like it.It had rained in Hotchkiss all week long. Not a good sign for the big outdoor events scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Pickin’ in the Park bringing outstanding talent to Paonia

Few surprises at marijuana hearing
The first order of business at the May 9 Hotchkiss Town Council was to conduct a public hearing on a hotel/restaurant liquor license for the North Fork Valley Restaurant at 141 W. Bridge Street. Owner Larry Jakubiak explained that the renewal notice was lost in the mail for six months, and by the time it was realized what had happened, the restaurant's liquor license had expired.
Gymkhana series begins May 29
Members of the Surface Creek Saddle Club met April 29 to finalize the schedule for the club's annual summer gymkhana series. Each gymkhana will include a barrel race, pole bending and flag race, and each night there will be a unique fun race.
Keeping an eye on Fruitgrowers Dam
Photo by Hank Lohmeyer A work crew set up last week at the base of Antelope Hill next to Fruitgrowers Reservoir to replace in-ground instrumentation that monitors landform movements and stability of the dam structure.Following a multi-agency emergency preparedness exercise last week in Delta, OCID Vice President Jan Gage shared with the DCI some information from the Bureau of Reclamation about ongoing ground condition monitoring that takes place at Fruitgrowers Reservoir.
Last week, work crews were installing replacement instruments that measure the rate of ground movements and any "slippage" of the dam structure from its foundation.
