Angel Covers director Kari Fillmore with some of the children being helped by the Angel Covers Foundation. Fillmore was one of the original founders of the foundation, created to help children who will likely spend their childhoods in orphanages.

It’s a long journey from Cedaredge to Nairobi, located in the Republic of Kenya, East Africa.

But for Cedaredge resident Judy Weaver, it’s an experience she will never forget.

A photo of two friends making their way back to class after picking up Food for Thought backpacks at Lincoln Elementary poignantly illustrates what the Opportunity School’s program is achieving.

The Delta Opportunity School’s Food for Thought program is feeding a real community need. At the same time, it stimulates student minds with powerful doses of success and self worth.

Crawford glass carver Lark Abel shows how her creations are born. This pencil drawing of Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce Indians will soon be an ink drawing which will eventually be etched and carved into an original piece of art. When ﬁnished, an eagle will be the most prominent ﬁgure and Chief Joseph will be a more subtle background ﬁgure.

When glass artist Lark Abel ﬁrst visited Crawford several years ago, she discovered a blossoming arts community.

“Crawford and Paonia have incredibly talented people,” said Abel, who has been a working artist for almost 40 years.

Rooms full of memories

The Consolidated School building, completed in Cedaredge in 1920, was approved by Colorado State Historical Society to be entered on the Colorado State Register of Historic Places on Sept. 4, 1998. A band of decorative brick work lines the front of the building just below the eaves and brick inlayed arches are found above the windows on either side and above the doorway.

Take a look back at the history of the old school as building a new Cedaredge Elementary School and restoration of the 1920 Consolidated School building gets underway.

In 1919-1920 the school district worked toward constructing one large building to accommodate all students in grades 1-12.

Oliver Lee works on the rigging detail of a scale wooden plank on bulkhead model of the Pride of Baltimore schooner, commissioned in 1974 to serve as a “good-will ambassador” for the city and based on a 19th century design.

During the early years of the 19th century the United States, fed up at the British navy’s haughtiness and with disagreements over shipping and trade on the high seas, declared war on Great Britain on June 18, 1812. Sometimes referred to as the “Second War of Independence,” and the “forgotten war,” the War of 1812 lasted for a little more than two years.

First family of fast draw

Delta county’s first family of Fast Draw, the Burnhams, shown from left are Cheryl Short of Orchard City, Terri Thase of Hotchkiss, Tristen Burnham and Brooke Acker of Grand Junction, Anita and Chuck Burnham of Crawford, and Debbie and Del Burnham of Lochbuie.

Chuck and Anita Burnham of Crawford, along with their children and grandchildren, are Delta County’s “First Family of Fast Draw.”

Chuck and Anita and their family compete in Ol’ West style fast draw events that are held around the state and region, sanctioned by the World Fast Draw Association (WFDA).

An old-fashioned artist

A Colorado boy, Ricky Sparks loves to design and create pieces that come from the outdoors he grew up in. His aspen and oak leaves are very popular with clients.

As many artists as there are in Delta County, there are as many forms of art created. Ricky Sparks of Crawford is an artist that creates beautiful, high-quality, functional hand-forged ornamental and architectural pieces in steel, iron and copper.

Those oh so useful sewing machines!

Pattie Timmerwilke, along with other quilt club members, met at Polly Pulver’s home for their “Thurs-bee” once-a-month meeting. The children’s quilt, made by S&B Quilters in Hotchkiss, was displayed. It, along with other small children’s quilts, will be donated to the North Fork Valley Children’s Party.

Owning a few sewing machines developed into a collection for Polly Pulver. She estimates that she probably has about 30.
