Hops harvest ushers in new crop for Delta County

Hops vines after harvesting are fed individually by hand by Paonia grower Glen Fuller of Rising Sun Farms into the German-made hops picker that Ed Tuft of Leroux Creek Foods imported and had rebuilt to process the local harvest.

The harvest began on Aug. 31. Before a week had gone past, it was over.

This harvest is a relatively new feature in Delta County’s familiar annual cycle of sowing and gathering.

Crafting real apple cider

At Blossomwood Cidery, quality cider production involves everything from planting and picking to bottling and labeling, including slow aging in oaken casks.

Delta County’s small acreage agriculture producers create some of the best and most unique culinary products available.

Shawn and Janese Carney, since 2005, have been turning the fruits of their labor into one of the most unique local products of all at their Blossomwood Cidery just north of Cedaredge on NE Indian Camp Avenue.

Preserving the community’s heartbeat

Fund raising has begun to renovate the Crawford Community Center and town hall. For the past 100+ years, the building has been the heart of the community, and recently got an addition in the form of a large heart, donated by members of the Friends of the Crawford Town Hall.

In small towns, in close-knit communities, a building is often more than a building. More than ofﬁce space or storage space, the right building is the community in and of itself; it is the heartbeat, it is home.

Remembering the neighborhood store

The old Colby Store was moved to Pioneer Town, renovated, and stocked with memorabilia of earlier days. Rebuilding and renovation was completed in 1983, the ﬁrst of many buildings that make up the museum. The boardwalk extends the entire length of the main street.

Every building in Cedaredge’s Pioneer Town has a long and storied past. The Coalby General Store reminds us of the importance these small stores played in supplying smaller communities and as a place to meet friends and neighbors.

Crafting glass into art!

James Lewis of Cedaredge has been handcrafting stained glass works of art for years, ﬁrst in Lake City and here for the past 10 years. This is a piece he’s currently working on. When it’s ﬁnished, a small motorized pump will push water between two identical sheets of glass to make it seem as if the ﬁsh are swimming in moving water. When the sun shines through from behind the glass (right) the sculpture becomes alive with color, depth and movement.

It’s doubtful James Lewis would introduce himself as an artist. He often describes himself as a retired police ofﬁcer.

An invitation to Upward Trails

THE FIRST Upward Trails group tackled Uncompahgre Peak (in the background) in 1975.

Not everyone who has attended Delta High School has received an invitation to go on Upward Trails, a school-sponsored backpacking trip for students who excelled in their first three years of high school. The program originated in 1975 and was headed by Alvin Williams, a science teacher at Delta High School.

Pastor Jan Johnson looks up from the crow’s nest for a snapshot from atop the mainsail mast. She participated in an Earthwatch Institute Expedition on board a 60-ft. sailboat off the coast of Scotland earlier this summer, helping gather data through sightings of whales and other marine animals.

“Got a whale of a tale to tell you lads, a whale of a tale that’s true . . . I swear on my tattoo!”

While making out her “bucket list” of things to do before dying, Cedaredge resident Jan Johnson discovered three “must do” items on her list — ﬁrst and foremost, visit Ireland; second, to participate in an Earthwatch Institute Expedition; and third, to make a pilgrimage to the Isle of Iona with John Philip Newell.(Newell is a poet, scholar, teacher and former Warden of Iona Abbey in the Western Isles of Scotland. He is currently Companion Theologian for the American Spirituality Centre of Casa del Sol in the high desert of New Mexico, and is internationally acclaimed for his work in the ﬁeld of Celtic spirituality.)
