Geocaching ~ high tech treasure hunts

In the last couple of years, geocaching has become an outdoor phenomenon, and Delta County is no exception.

Sandy Mumm uncovers a geocache hidden near the Olathe Sweet Corn Festival grounds. She was the first person to ever find this cache.
In May 2000, the government removed "selective availability" on GPS units, meaning civilians had greater access to more information and greater accuracy via GPS.

Keeping traditional ‘cowboy’ music alive

Cedaredge resident Ray Carpenter is the quintessential balladeer and singer of traditional "cowboy" songs (not to be confused with today's genre of country/western/rock crossover music).

In addition to singing, Ray’s other passion is riding his horses on the Grand Mesa and Uncompahgre.
Apparently his parents - Bob and Evelyn Carpenter - weren't paying any attention to Willie Nelson's warning, "Mama don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys," for that is exactly what their oldest son Ray did.

A trail through the waters

A sail boat in the distance cuts a graceful wake in this view from our campsite on the uninhabited Turn Island. In the background is San Juan Island, the largest of the island group which bears the same name.
A trail through the waters of the Pacific Northwest established centuries ago by native Americans was our route on a journey of discovery, enjoyment and fun touring the San Juan Islands of Washington State over Father's Day in a graceful, two-man sea kayak.

During our five days on the water north of Puget Sound near the Canadian Border we visited or camped on seven different islands, two of them devoid of human settlement.

Each year the state officer team has an international agriculture experience to gain knowledge about agriculture in another country. This photo was taken with the 2008-2009 State FFA officer team members and agricultural students at the Northwest A&F University in Xian, China.
Ashley Breitnauer has been involved with the National FFA Organization since her first semester freshman year at Hotchkiss High School with FFA advisor Teresa Burns. Jim Vinson became her advisor when she transferred to Cedaredge High School.

"At first I wasn't into it, the agricultural education, and I didn't understand the point of the blue jackets."

The Shanti Baila Troupe consists of Lesley Lewis, Heidi Hudek, Clare Cochran and Kristi Sayer. They have performed at AppleFest and other functions in the Surface Creek Valley.
Tradition holds that Salome's (Herodias' daughter), famous (or infamous) "Dance of the Seven Veils" delighted King Herod so much that he promised the girl half his kingdom.

This ’68 Buick Electra is Sarah Triantos’ first car. She restored it twice, both times with her dad. She’s definitely a “Buick Girl”; she also fixed up another ’68 Electra.
The purr of a well-tuned engine, the sparkle of sunlight hitting a beautiful paint job, the rhythmic hum of tires on the roadway... all music to the ears of Sarah Triantos, a self-proclaimed car fanatic.

She's been into cars since she was a baby.
