d08_bp1 The ladies line up twice a day at the Avalanche Cheese Company's dairy goat farm, anxious to munch on grain while providing milk for such artisan cheeses as chevre, "Lamborn Bloomers" and "Midnight Blue." Each doe has its own personality, and a name — Angelina, Quandry, Quinoa and her sister Ginger, Rose, and Arroyo, the queen of the herd.

The Volk Legacy

The ranch at the base of the Ragged Mountains has provided a beautiful setting for 100 years of ranching heritage. The Volks have been in the registered Salers cattle business for about 30 years.

The lush green meadows of the Volks' Ragged Mountain ranch are surrounded by the majestic mountains of Colorado. Streams bring snowmelt from the higher elevations, providing a plentiful source of water for irrigating pastures and consumption by man and livestock.

To make sure all participants in China’s Great Wall Marathon understand what they are undertaking, the runners must attend a pre-inspection day of walking a portion of the route up and down the Great Wall. With more than 5,000 steps and lots of elevation change, this marathon is considered one of the toughest in the world.

While many people dread the end of a decade, Cedaredge resident Barbara (Barb) Churchley has a different way of looking at and celebrating birthdays that end in "zero." Barb sees each decade as an opportunity to learn something new or to be challenged by a new adventure.

The star of the show, a four-day-old Norwegian Fjord foal, didn’t have a name yet when Brandy Ferganchick of Eckert’s Thunder Mountain Fjords gave a clinic on the breed at All Saints Lutheran Church for the Vestagjell Lodge of the Sons of Norway.

It was a local celebration of Norwegian culture and heritage at Cory's All Saints Lutheran Church on a sunny Sunday afternoon in May.

Friendly people of Norwegian and Scandinavian heritage from Delta, Mesa and Montrose counties and beyond gathered for a monthly meeting and Norwegian feast.

Volunteers make it happen

Lyn Moseley and Richard Blanning volunteered to clean up Pioneer Town’s Lizard Head Saloon to get the building ready for the opening of the summer season on May 28, which is also Heritage Day when admission is free. The buildings will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., along with demonstrations and horse-drawn wagon rides. The Cedaredge Rotary will also be selling hamburgers and hotdogs at noon.

Volunteers make up the core of all happenings at Pioneer Town in Cedaredge. It's been that way since its beginning back in 1980 when Maynard Nelson took the reins and worked with a group that had tried to get a historical society and museum started following the Centennial Bicentennial celebration in 1976.

Maynard Nelson made it happen!

It all started with an Earth Box for Alison Gannett. For those who have limited space or don’t know where to start in raising their own food, an Earth Box or small raised bed can be a great jumping off point.

Alison Gannett and Jason Trimm didn't let a recent rain interfere with their work.

"I'm trying to think of a best rain-day project right now," said Trimm, stacking straw bales under a constant, cool drizzle while chickens pranced in and out of their coop-on-wheels.

Delta Renaissance

The colorful and interesting encampments seen periodically on Delta’s Crawford Lane are historical re-enactments of Renaissance Fair events that have become the focus and passion of a Delta family.

People may have wondered about the tents and banners that periodically appear for a couple of days on Crawford Avenue across from Delta's Wal-Mart.

The encampments are local "festivals" associated with Renaissance Fairs that take place in many locations.
