Those oh so useful sewing machines!

d08_bp1
Pattie Timmerwilke, along with other quilt club members, met at Polly Pulver’s home for their “Thurs-bee” once-a-month meeting. The children’s quilt, made by S&B Quilters in Hotchkiss, was displayed. It, along with other small children’s quilts, will be donated to the North Fork Valley Children’s Party.
Owning a few sewing machines developed into a collection for Polly Pulver. She estimates that she probably has about 30.

Best friends!

d08_bp1
According to Milan Kundera, “To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring — it was peace.” The author also finds peace with a quiet stroll through the leaves of Cedaredge Town Park with Bonnie.
They say that , “A man’s best friend is his dog.”—(George Vest), but Corey Ford said,  “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.”

And, if you happen to be a homeless, a stray, injured or abandoned dog or cat roaming around in the Surface Creek area, that “properly trained” human may very well be a member of a highly respected, caring, hardworking and amazingly dedicated group of volunteers of the Friends of Cedaredge Animal Control (FCAC).

‘Rembrandt of Rubbish’ taps into magical energy

d08_bp1
Metal Sculptor Bill Morrow used his understanding of quantum physics to create this “Molecular Inquisition.” The hemisphere is built out of a box of leveling legs normally used under major appliances. With that beginning structure Morrow felt the piece “took on a life of it’s own.” The intricate interior is a magical assemblage of stainless steel springs, nickel plated bead chain, printer head parts and pieces, plastic rhinestones from a pair of gaudy ladies shoes and 100 brass acorn nuts all reflected in the custom fitted mirror.
Sculptor Bill Morrow has a philosophy about life. “I have a tendency to say, ‘Yes.’ ‘No’ closes doors.”

Before being known as a sculptor, Morrow was successful at winning bids and landing welding jobs in support of the oil and gas industry on the Western Slope of Colorado.

Hops harvest ushers in new crop for Delta County

d06_bp1
Hops vines after harvesting are fed individually by hand by Paonia grower Glen Fuller of Rising Sun Farms into the German-made hops picker that Ed Tuft of Leroux Creek Foods imported and had rebuilt to process the local harvest.
The harvest began on Aug. 31. Before a week had gone past, it was over.

This harvest is a relatively new feature in Delta County’s familiar annual cycle of sowing and gathering.

Preserving the community’s heartbeat

d06_bp1
Fund raising has begun to renovate the Crawford Community Center and town hall. For the past 100+ years, the building has been the heart of the community, and recently got an addition in the form of a large heart, donated by members of the Friends of the Crawford Town Hall.
In small towns, in close-knit communities, a building is often more than a building. More than office space or storage space, the right building is the community in and of itself; it is the heartbeat, it is home.

Remembering the neighborhood store

c08_bp1
The old Colby Store was moved to Pioneer Town, renovated, and stocked with memorabilia of earlier days. Rebuilding and renovation was completed in 1983, the first of many buildings that make up the museum. The boardwalk extends the entire length of the main street.
Every building in Cedaredge’s Pioneer Town has a long and storied past. The Coalby General Store reminds us of the importance these small stores played in supplying smaller communities and as a place to meet friends and neighbors.

Crafting glass into art!

c08_bp1
James Lewis of Cedaredge has been handcrafting stained glass works of art for years, first in Lake City and here for the past 10 years. This is a piece he’s currently working on. When it’s finished, a small motorized pump will push water between two identical sheets of glass to make it seem as if the fish are swimming in moving water. When the sun shines through from behind the glass (right) the sculpture becomes alive with color, depth and movement.
It’s doubtful James Lewis would introduce himself as an artist. He often describes himself as a retired police officer.
